Thanks Claire for including us readers . I am far from a professional writer or journalist. It seems there is always a tension in producing written work - either informative or creative- the writer always knows it could be better, somehow improved . Yet you have to get a product out there. As a reader, I strive to learn more about , or at least keep in perspective where the author was coming from. The reader should avoid using too much hindsight. GO ahead and put yourself out there, you have something to say and you think deeply. I vote for history and habeus. Thanks for your work.

The one about Russia's activities in Africa also stands out, since it seems like Russia is making some serious inroads into Africa and I've read where the Trump Administration wants to close down a number of embassies and reduce U.S. presence there.

I’ll read all of them. “Do you have good seats for the end of world?”, “No, even better: I’ve got the best commentary”. At one point I thought an overdose of CG might colour my world view so I started reading “Restoration by Ayaan Hirsi Ali” who recommended a Trump vote, just to balance my diet. But I’m only paying for CG. My world view is fine, I’ve picked a side.

Sorry to say, deep-six everything else and go India-Pak. It's the ballgame right now.

Thank you to everyone who replied! I realize that I should have figured out and specified how I'm counting the vote--is this ranked choice? If someone "liked" your ordering, does that mean it's an extra vote in favor of that order? A half vote? I think there's a clear preference here for looking at the way China is filling the void, and I'll work out what comes next tomorrow.

Fold as many as possible into Global Eyes, and then the ones that really don't fit, can be stand-alone essays.

After Midnight in Paris, so this may be useless, but here goes anyway! But the basic thing is just do what you want. Haters going to hate. Whatevs. You only get to live through the Fall of Rome once! Yeet it.

Well, here's the ranked assignment, as understood:

*BONUS ARTICLE IDEA: The AI 2027 Report (and whether humans - all humans - of all creeds, all political persuasions, have to act against the AI arms race before it's too late)* https://ai-2027.com/

1.) Do political protests work? Under what circumstances?

1B.) The Trump Administration accidentally texted me its economic plans. [wtf, Claire?]

2.) The dizzying speed with which China is filling the void the US is leaving [in your wheelhouse and not covered enough in the English-speaking press]

3.) Interpreting El Salvador’s crime statistics [oddly and increasingly relevant]

4.) The historical significance of the writ of habeas corpus [ditto]

5.) The global effects of Trump’s trade policy;

6.) Will Trump preside over Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons?

7.) Mark Bloch and the curious case of Lisa Murkowski

8.) Middle East 201: More reports from the class, with a modern Turkey reading list;

9.) Russia’s activities in Africa and why they matter, with Philip Obaji Jr;

10.) Global Eyes

10B.) "Southern Revanchism".

11.) Project Russia, Sergei Cristo, and our betrayal of Ukraine;

12.) Will the US leave the IMF and the World Bank, and what would happen if we did?

13.) The unending shame of our betrayal of our Afghan allies;

14.) An analysis of the prospects for Trump’s impeachment. [Ah, the chocolate teapot of the Constitution! Third time's the charm.]

Claire also has an unfinished series in which she's having a discussion of ethics with ChatGPT-4.5, so she could segue from that, into this topic...

I am looking for grounding, inspiration and solace in Europe of the '30s and '40s, so Mark Bloch and Murkowski, assuming that you mean Marc Bloch! Second choice would be Project Russia. Whatever! If you write it, I'll read it.

The rest I'd probably end up reading because I'm a fan, but doubt they'd be adding much to what's already out there.

For me, "Do political protests work?" is what I'd most like your take on. Second choice would be "China filling the void," which it feels like almost no Americans are considering. Courage, Claire, your voice is indispensable!

Your take is perfectly on point. Reminds me of applying for a visa at the Vietnamese embassy in Cambodia during the Vietnam War. Suddenly, everyone started screaming and running in all directions. I responded by sitting on the floor. Finally, I asked someone what the commotion was about. "Someone threw a bomb through the front door, and it hasn't gone off yet," was the answer. "Oh, that's it," I thought. A few minutes later, I exited a second-story window, felt my way along a ledge outside the building, jumped to a nearby wall, and exited along an adjacent fence. The bomb never went off. I have a definite feeling that that's where we are now. Trump is yanking the chain. The stock market acts like an epileptic suffering from manic depression, or "bipolar disorder" in the current terminology. Trump's family makes a fortune playing the ups and downs. The rest of us are nervous wrecks, unless we decide to take a step back, calm down, and opt out until the chaos inevitably runs its course and we realize that it was all much ado about nothing.
