A flawed and foolish gambit by the ICC
The indictment of Netanyahu will deepen the court's reputational problems and might help the beleaguered Israeli prime minister
Setting aside the evidentiary basis for this case, it's obviously deeply flawed on jurisdictional and procedural grounds; it clearly opens the court to the charge that it is pursuing publicity and applause, not equal justice for all. These problems are sufficient that only those already firmly convinced that Israelis are natural-born war criminals will see these proceedings as legitimate. It seems to me both mischievous and deeply unwise for the ICC prosecutor to pursue this. It will damage Israel and the court alike while working the world into an even more dangerous antisemitic frenzy. -
The decision by the International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor to seek indictments against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant could badly backfire, both by harming the court’s standing and by helping the beleaguered Israeli government, and especially its much-criticized leader.
