Since my Masters in GIS is the logical separation of the United States, which is an artificial creation, has nothing to do with state boundaries, and much to do with natural boundaries. The catalyst for starting my work was this article:
Another catalyst was the articles in Stratfor which describes America as an inevitable empire. I never saw the US as breaking up by political boundaries. Indeed the state's boundaries exist to prevent breakup. However, if one takes into account the human and physical boundaries, then it becomes clearer how the US might break apart.
Right now, my preliminary results suggests two large republics. The first, would comprise of the whole of the Mississippi and its tributaries watershed. Navigable rivers are the cheapest form of transportation. So this republic has to include all other areas. So it would be part of the southern states, Florida, Puerto Rico and Cuba would become part of this republic.
The most interesting possibility is the creation of the Deseret Republic. The previous maps stopped at the US border, which is an artificial one. Right now, I'm trying to figure out its southern border. The majority of the Mormon Church speaks Spanish. The killing of the Mormon family in Northern Mexico was not done in error. The drug cartels effectively run large portions of Northern Mexico and either by instinct or by design recognize its threat.
Their could be a linear country on the west coast that would stop north of San Diego and could extend up through British Columbia. The Northeast might unite for a time, but would eventually break up into city-states along the coast, Portions of Northern US from Maine to the Plain states might form into nations with parts of Canada. Indeed in my own state, Indiana, The southern limit of Canada extends downward to the continental divide south of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The great lakes and St Lawrence Seaway would comprise another separate nation.
Deseret might expand northward into Canada. How I am uncertain at this point. But there are influential families in Idaho. I'm working on the influence of the Church in Western Canada at this point.

Probably ought to just cut our throats and get out of the way.
Or pull a Kissinger and preemptively surrender to our enemies. For real this time.
