While those British cops certainly deserve kudos, let's not forget that two of them were seriously wounded by this sword-wielding maniac. Here in the USA, the cops most certainly have been shot him—without casualties on their part. I have a hard time seeing a problem with that.
Additionally, it should be noted that many--not all but many—of the individuals shot and killed by American police are carrying firearms themselves. The British police needn't worry too much about that, presumably.
The door-cam video does not show it well enough to be dispositive - but that sword is not a sword or a machete; it looks more like a Japanese uchigatana, specifically the single-edged katana. I note the blade's degree of curvature, its lengthened (two-handed) grip, and [difficult to see] its guard.
Which I find somewhat odd if I am correct because even reproductions of Japanese tachi and uchigatana blades are expensive. (Japanese originals are frighteningly expensive.) Why would this person brandish a collector's sword? For his 'objective,' any sharp point and edge would suffice.
I would classify the weapon in the video as a short sword. A Roman gladius wouldn’t be any longer.
As to why an expensive blade, it’s not like he needs to save his money- after an attack like that he’ll be either dead or imprisoned for the foreseeable future.
This incredibly brave and focused policewoman is going straight for this guy while "armed" with a one shot Taser. He has already killed a 14 year old, slashed 2 fellow officers, one who has her hand severed, and has already been tasered twice. She hits him in the back where his clothing is not too thick to penetrate. Cop haters will still find something wrong.

Amazing, isn't it?
