A happy Thanksgiving to all my American readers. And to all my readers, really. Here’s Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation: Washington, D.C. October 3, 1863 By the President of the United States A Proclamation The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and even soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.
And happy (belated) Thanksgiving to you, Claire. I am grateful for you and your colleagues who bring us the news of the world we can't get anywhere else.
Lincoln’s words, written in a language whose cadence recalls that of the King James Bible, are a reminder that many Americans of his era believed that they were living in Biblical times, with all things working out in accordance with the divine Will.
I for one am glad that our secular society no longer ascribes every earthly blessing or calamity to God. We need to hold humans accountable, not so much for sins against the Almighty but for the terrible things people do to one another. I am thankful this day and every day that most of my fellow citizens live in peace and with a decent level of security and comfort, with hope for an ever better future. I can only wish that this were the case for all people everywhere.
