This was hilarious, top to bottom. As soon as I saw the colorful and over-the-top email notice, I knew it would be. Well done, Claire! And I find myself right there with Michael Booth. :-) Almost to the number of years.
They are so darling. I can't add photos to the comments, but in a post soon I'll show you some wonderful photos. They've brought so much joy into my life.
How do they respond? About the way US shelters do, I suppose: Happy that the kitties have found a home, sad that a promising foster home won't be available. (I have no problem at all fostering more: I've had 7 cats living together happily in this apartment, and it's really kitted out well for multiple cats--lots of places up high on the walls to climb up to, little nooks and crannies for them to hide in and explore; plenty of room for everyone, so long as you're no more than ten inches tall--more than one human would be cramped. But I fear the association suspected me of being a hoarder, because they haven't called me. I'd be perfectly happy to foster another litter if it would be of help.)
The sale is over now, yes?
Yes.

How are the little kitties anyway, other than spoiled? How do French animal shelters respond when you inform them of a foster fail?

Clearly what you needed was a new set of cats, so that's good.
I suspect also that finding people who volunteer to foster animals when what they really want is new pets of their own happens pretty often.
