The news from Ukraine is simply extraordinary. The army that so many predicted would collapse within days of Russia’s invasion just pulled off a brilliant feint and then a complex combined arms attack, synchronizing armor, infantry, artillery, and air defense to break through the Russian lines in Kharkiv, sweep northeast, and liberate village after village, retaking Balakliya, Kupyansk (a major road and rail transport hub), Izium (a major garrison and command center), and too many other towns and villages to name. Russians are scattering, abandoning their equipment, huge stocks of ammunition, their kit, uneaten food. The general commanding Russia’s western army group has been sacked.
