Israelis have begun calling these events the “tofet”—the inferno. More than a thousand are dead. As many are missing. The toll represents the most Jews killed on a single day since the Holocaust.
Before turning to this, though, a word about the earthquake in Afghanistan. Two 6.3-magnitude earthquakes in the Zindajan district of Western Afghanistan have killed at least 3,000 people and injured countless more. The epicenter was near Herat, close to the Iranian border.
Many remain under the rubble. Many more are injured and homeless, with winter fast approaching. Whole villages have been destroyed. But there have been no search and rescue teams. There is no hospital, no shelter, no government. There is not enough food. And the country is in the hands of terrorists.
The UN estimates that 362,000 people need immediate aid, but no one wants to send aid to a country governed by the Taliban. Aid agencies are appealing for help, but there couldn’t be a worse moment to try to capture the world’s attention.

A US National Security Council spokesman has confirmed the deaths of nine US citizens in Israel.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant: “I have ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed. We are fighting human animals and we are acting accordingly.”
