We can and should judge a society by how well it prepares for earthquakes. It’s a direct measure of its concern for human life, ability to control corruption, capacity to plan for the future, and ability to carry out that plan.
The Earthquake
Some 2,700 people have so far been reported dead in Turkey and Syria, but from every video, image, and witness account I’ve seen, this is a vast undercount. It looks like one of the worst earthquakes in living Turkish memory.
