Claire—this began as a standard edition of Global Eyes. But then I began writing what I meant to be a quick note about a very stupid story that recently ran in The New York Times, and, as sometimes happens, I discovered in myself an access of aggravation. Global Eyes somehow became dissertation-length.

I know if I send you a 50,000-word version of Global Eyes, you’ll complain. So I decided to send only the most urgent stories from Africa, Asia, and the Americas today. I’ll send a follow-up about those regions tomorrow, along with the Daily Bat, the Daily Scolding, and the Daily Animal. This is still long, in other words, but it’s manageable.
