Claire—this began as a standard edition of Global Eyes. But then I began writing what I meant to be a quick note about a very stupid story that recently ran in The New York Times, and, as sometimes happens, I discovered in myself an access of aggravation. Global Eyes somehow became dissertation-length.
I know if I send you a 50,000-word version of Global Eyes, you’ll complain. So I decided to send only the most urgent stories from Africa, Asia, and the Americas today. I’ll send a follow-up about those regions tomorrow, along with the Daily Bat, the Daily Scolding, and the Daily Animal. This is still long, in other words, but it’s manageable. And it’s all important. Okay?
